Bottom financial quintile student support

Programmes or initiatives to assist students who fall into the bottom 20% of household income group (or a more tightly defined target) in the country to successfully complete their studies. Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) actively participating in anti-poverty programs, aiming to make a significant impact in the community. UPTM has launched many programs aimed at fighting poverty, offering students and communities opportunities to learn new skills and improve their lives. Among the activities within the initiative are:

1. EDUCATION FINANCING

    MAJLIS AMANAH RAKYAT (MARA)

MAJLIS AMANAH RAKYAT (MARA) provides Education Loan facilities to eligible Bumiputera students to continue their studies. It is offered specifically for SPM and Diploma-graduate students to further studies at Diploma or First Degree levels in the field and institution within the country set by MARA.

MARA offers education loan applications in the form of convertible loans to undergraduate students for full-time studies at selected institutions of higher education (IPT) within the country, according to specific fields of study. The education of MARA is a continuous effort based on knowledge, technology and entrepreneurial values to develop holistic and balanced humans.

NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION FUND CORPORATION (PTPTN)

The PTPTN Education Loan Scheme was established for the purpose of providing educational loans to students pursuing studies at local Higher Education Institutions (IPT). This education loan will allow students to finance all or part of their tuition fees and living expenses throughout their period of study. The PTPTN education loan facility is open to students continuing their studies at local Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) only.

The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) was established under the National Higher Education Fund Corporation Act 1997 (Act 566), which came into force on 1 July 1997. PTPTN commenced operations on 1 November 1997 at the Wisma Chase Perdana Building, Off Jalan Semantan, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur

The high percentage of students funded by MARA (72.9%) reflects an important effort to support students from lower-income backgrounds, directly contributing to SDG 1 - No Poverty. By providing financial aid, MARA helps to reduce the financial barriers to education, which is crucial for lifting individuals out of poverty and promoting social mobility. This distribution highlights the importance of continued financial support for vulnerable groups to ensure that they have equal opportunities for education, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction.

 

2. ZAKAT UPTM

A zakat institution is an organization established to create a system that systematically manages zakat assets in carrying out the activities of collecting and distributing zakat funds to eligible recipients (Asnaf). In Malaysia, there are 14 zakat institutions that have been established, representing 13 states, and 3 of them in the Federal Territories are managed by one zakat institution

The Zakat Committee was established to assist students who are less fortunate and selected to receive zakat aid. This initiative is a key agenda in ensuring the welfare governance of UPTM students is well-maintained and prioritized, while also supporting SDG 1 – No Poverty. We hope that this zakat contribution will benefit the selected students by meeting their financial needs for their studies at UPTM, thereby contributing to the goal of reducing poverty.

AZKA-PPZ Corner @ UPTM was launced on Monday, 13th February 2023, at the Al-Khawarizmi Main Library, Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia. The Azka-PPZ Corner was a joint initiative between the Zakat Collection Center (PPZ) of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia, aimed at providing zakat information resources to the UPTM community. Through this collaboration, 160 books and magazines of various genres and academic disciplines were donated for the corner’s use.

The ceremony was officiated by YBhg Tuan Haji Abdul Hakim bin Amir Osman, Chief Executive Officer of PPZ MAIWP, and YBhg Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahim bin Abdul Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of UPTM. Also, in attendance were YBhg Tuan Haji Ramli bin Mohd Jawi, Deputy President of Student Affairs, representing the Acting Chief Executive Officer of KPTM Headquarters, along with members of the KPTM Headquarters Management, UPTM, and the Zakat Collection Center. UPTM extended its deepest gratitude to PPZ for this noble effort, and it was hoped that it would benefit the entire UPTM community and the public.

3. WAKAF KPTM

Wakaf is a form of charity in Islam where wealth is given to specific recipients with a defined intention, intended to provide ongoing support for necessities, facilities, and economic development.

Wakaf collections at KPTM will involve cash endowments from donors including KPTM & UPTM community members, KPTM & UPTM alumni, government and private organizations, and the public.

Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM) has been approved to manage an Education Endowment (Wakaf Pendidikan) by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) since November 8, 2018. This initiative aims to raise funds to provide necessities and facilities for needy students and staff, and to support educational programs based on Islamic Shariah principles at KPTM.

4. INSENTIF

UPTM provides various incentives to eligible students aligns with SDG 1 - No Poverty. By offering support and resources, UPTM helps students from lower-income backgrounds, including those in the asnaf category, overcome financial barriers to education. This assistance can improve their chances of graduating and achieving better economic stability, directly contributing to the goal of reducing poverty. Supporting these students helps ensure that educational opportunities are accessible to all, regardless of economic status, which is a key aspect of combating poverty.

5. KEMPEN PEMBERIAN INSENTIF (DISKAUN 30%-YURAN PENGAJIAN) SEMPENA ULANGTAHUN KPTM KE-20

Benefits to inactive debtors of Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) / Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM) through the provision of incentives (discounts) in conjunction with KPTM's 20th anniversary. Inactive debtors include graduates, those who have had their status downgraded, those who have been removed from the roll, failed to resign, or were dismissed, and who still have outstanding debts with UPTM / KPTM
