Does your university have direct involvement in, or input into, national government or regional nongovernment organisations SDG policy development - including identifying problems and challenges, developing policies and strategies, modelling likely futures with and without interventions, monitoring and reporting on interventions, and enabling adaptive management?

Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) shows its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through active collaboration with national and regional stakeholders in policy development. The university collaborates with government ministries, agencies, and non-governmental organizations to address socio-economic, environmental, and educational challenges.

 

RELIGIOUS AND EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR THE 3M COMMUNITY OF THE ORANG ASLI SOCIETY

Dr. Madihatun binti Zainuddin, a Senior Lecturer from the Centre of Islamic, General and Language Studies (CIGLS), led the Program Pembangunan Keagamaan dan Pendidikan 3M Komuniti Masyarakat Orang Asli (Religious and Educational Development Program for the 3M Indigenous Community) start from 6 January until 27 April 2024. 

The program, conducted in collaboration with the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia for Sustainable Development Goals (APPGM-SDG), UPTM (CIGLS & FCOM), JAKOA, PMOA (Penggerak Masyarakat Orang Asli), JHEINS, and the District Islamic Religious Officer (PAID) Rembau, was successfully implemented from January to April 2024 at Surau Al-Hidayah, Kampung Pabai, Miku Rembau, Negeri Sembilan.

A total of 20 Orang Asli muallaf participants successfully completed their studies and showed great enthusiasm to continue their pursuit of knowledge even after the program ended. This initiative focused on enhancing religious and general education among the Orang Asli community by emphasizing the 3M elements Membaca, Mengira dan Menulis (Reading, Counting, and writing) in both English and Islamic learning (Iqra’ and Fardhu Ain). The collaboration with APPGM-SDG aims to empower the community through education and strengthen their understanding of fundamental Islamic knowledge, aligning with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

UPTM’S ROLE IN SDG POLICY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INSTITUTE FOR BUMIPUTERA ECONOMIC STUDIES (IKEB)

On 14 February 2025, Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) hosted a meeting of the Institute for Bumiputera Economic Studies (IKEB) in Kuala Lumpur, chaired by YBhg. Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Noor Azlan Ghazali, Chairman of the IKEB Advisory Panel and Director of MINDA UKM. The meeting highlighted UPTM’s active role in contributing to national and regional policy discussions that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in empowering the Bumiputera economy.

IKEB serves as a centralized hub for research, strategic planning, and information sharing, enabling the university to provide evidence-based insights to government and non-government organisations. Discussions at the meeting emphasized identifying challenges and opportunities in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development, evaluating socio-economic, educational, and cultural issues affecting the Bumiputera community, and modelling likely futures with or without strategic interventions.

The meeting was attended by members of the IKEB Advisory Panel, including YBhg. Tan Sri Dato Haji Alimuddin bin Haji Mohd. Dom, YBhg. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Haji Amiruddin bin Abdul Wahab, YBhg. Datuk Prof. Dr. Awang Azman bin Awang Pawi, YBhg. Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman bin Senin, and YBrs. Dr. Anuar Ahmad, alongside UPTM leadership such as Vice-Chancellor Prof. Madya Dr. Sharifah Syahirah binti Sy Shiekh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) Prof. Madya Dr. Muhamad Nizam bin Jali, and Director of IKEB Prof. Dr. Azahari bin Jamaludin, plus Deputy Directors and lecturers.

Through IKEB, UPTM contributes to policy development, strategic planning, monitoring, and adaptive management for SDG-related initiatives. This includes identifying key issues affecting the Bumiputera community, advising on strategies and interventions, and supporting data-driven decisions that inform both government and regional non-government organisations.

 

INSTITUT KAJIAN EKONOMI BUMIPUTERA (IKEB) 2nd MEETING

Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) hosted the 2nd Institut Kajian Ekonomi Bumiputera (IKEB) Meeting on 14 July 2025 at Dewan Nilam, UPTM. The meeting is aimed at enhancing strategic collaboration to build a stronger and more impactful Bumiputera economic research network.

It will bring together representatives from various universities and organisations such as UTM, UKM, UM, UPM, UiTM, CyberSecurity Malaysia, SME Corp and other strategic partners who share the mission of driving Bumiputera economic development.

UPTM remains steadfast in supporting Bumiputera economic empowerment through education, research and strategic data initiatives in line with the aspirations of the Bumiputera Economic Congress and the Bumiputera Transformation Plan 2035.

LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF IKEB UPTM

The launching ceremony of PACCT and IKEB was officiated by ybhg. Datuk Wira Dr. Asyraf Wajdi bin Dato’ Dusuki, Chairman of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA). He was accompanied by the MARA Management Team, State MARA Directors, Chief Executive Officers of MARA subsidiaries, members of the Board of Directors of KPTM Sdn. Bhd., ybhg. Encik Radzuan Razali, CEO of KPTM Sdn. Bhd., and Associate Professor Dr. Sharifah Syahirah binti Sy Shiekh, Vice-Chancellor of UPTM.

STUDY ON THE EMPOWERMENT OF TRAINING AND SKILLS FOR RURAL WOMEN

The document verification session with Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA) for the Study on the Empowerment of Training and Skills for Rural Women, held on 19 March 2024, was completed as part of UPTM’s direct involvement in supporting national initiatives related to SDG policy development. Through this collaboration, challenges faced by rural women were identified, strategies for skills empowerment were formulated, and evidence-based input was provided to inform policy and program implementation reflecting the university’s active contribution to national-level SDG planning and evaluation, particularly in advancing SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

ESG MICRO-CREDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

Prof Dato Dr. Rashila Binti Ramli, MySDG Academy along with 21 lecturers and the leadership team, attended a two-day (18 & 19 October 2024) ESG Micro-Credential drafting retreat in Putrajaya. The short course being developed is titled "Corporate Sustainability Accelerator Program: Designing Action Plans & Reporting".

This initiative, which began in February 2024, aims to establish a partnership between MySDG Academy and UPTM to offer micro-credentials to corporations. The project has now reached its final stage of development.

This effort supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), fostering collaboration between educational institutions and the corporate sector to advance the sustainability agenda. It also contributes to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by equipping professionals with necessary ESG skills.

APPGM-SDG IMPACT EVALUATION WORKSHOP 2024

This workshop involved 15 universities and 2 NGOs, with 72 evaluators participating. More than 340 programs are being evaluated across six main dimensions. GOALS TO GRASSROOTS: EVALUATING SDG IMPLEMENTATION

YBhg. Associate Professor Dr Sharifah Syahirah Sy Shiekh, Vice-Chancellor of UPTM, together with three researchers, has successfully published a book titled "From the Goals to Grassroots: Evaluating SDG Implementation." The book, led by Prof. Datuk Dr Rashila Ramli, a Professor at the Institute of Graduate Studies (IGS), UPTM, was officially launched at the Parliament Building in Malaysia.

This publication presents the findings of a community issue mapping report conducted across 30 parliamentary constituencies covering zones in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Moreover, the book stems from a mapping process carried out by APPGM-SDG through inclusive data collection. As a result, it provides valuable insights and contributes significantly to efforts aimed at developing and improving policies as well as empowering communities.
