Does your university as a body have programmes or initiatives to assist students who fall into the bottom 20% of household income group (or a more tightly defined target) in the country to successfully complete their studies?
Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) actively participating in anti-poverty programs, aiming to make a significant impact in the community. UPTM has launched many programs aimed at fighting poverty, offering students and communities opportunities to learn new skills and improve their lives. Among the activities within the initiative are:

MAJLIS AMANAH RAKYAT (MARA)

MAJLIS AMANAH RAKYAT (MARA) provides Education Loan facilities to eligible Bumiputera students to continue their studies. MARA offers education loan applications in the form of convertible loans to undergraduate students for full-time studies at selected institutions of higher education (IPT) within the country, according to specific fields of study. The education of MARA is a continuous effort based on knowledge, technology and entrepreneurial values to develop holistic and balanced humans.

NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION FUND CORPORATION (PTPTN)

The PTPTN Education Loan Scheme was established for the purpose of providing educational loans to students pursuing studies at local Higher Education Institutions (IPT). This education loan will allow students to finance all or part of their tuition fees and living expenses throughout their period of study. The PTPTN education loan facility is open to students continuing their studies at local Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) only.
The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) was established under the National Higher Education Fund Corporation Act 1997 (Act 566), which came into force on 1 July 1997. WAKAF MARA
Wakaf is a form of charity in Islam where wealth is given to specific recipients with a defined intention, intended to provide ongoing support for necessities, facilities, and economic development.
Wakaf KPTM has been rebranded as Wakaf MARA MADANI, a modern wakaf initiative that contributes to the development of education and the economic empowerment of the community.
Wakaf collections at KPTM will involve cash endowments from donors including KPTM & UPTM community members, KPTM & UPTM alumni, government and private organizations, and the public. Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM) has been approved to manage an Education Endowment (Wakaf Pendidikan) by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) since November 8, 2018. This initiative aims to raise funds to provide necessities and facilities for needy students and staff, and to support educational programs based on Islamic Shariah principles at KPTM.

ZAKAT KPTMSB
Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Sdn. Bhd. (KPTMSB) contributed a total of RM430,000 in zakat funds, benefiting asnaf staff and students, as well as tahfiz centres. Out of the total amount, RM350,000 was allocated to asnaf students of Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM) and Universiti Poly-Tech MARA (UPTM). Meanwhile, RM25,000 was contributed to asnaf staff, RM10,000 to Maahad Tahfiz Maubul Huffaz, and an additional Foodbank contribution worth RM45,000 was provided by PLUS.
Chairman of Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Sdn. Bhd. (KPTMSB), Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli, stated that the zakat contribution presented during the KPTM 2024 Ihya’ Ramadan Ceremony symbolizes KPTMSB’s continuous commitment to fulfilling its social responsibility to the community. “May this contribution remind us that Ramadan is not only about fasting and breaking fast, but also about giving, sharing, and caring,” he said.

Meanwhile, the President of the Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) Student Representative Council (SRC), Nurul Ain Kamaruzaman, expressed that the zakat contribution to asnaf students has helped alleviate some of their financial burdens.

She added that, given UPTM’s location in the heart of the city, the allowance received by students is often just enough to cover their basic living expenses.

ZAKAT UPTM

Zakat UPTM refers to the zakat programs and facilities provided for UPTM students, which include zakat assistance applications and digital zakat reference resources such as the AZKA Digital Corner.The Zakat application for UPTM students is now open. An outstanding but underprivileged student has been offered the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) at Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM).
Nor Hazreen Binti Muhammad Shah Rizan, accompanied by her two uncles, expressed her gratitude and joy for the concern and support shown by the Chairman of MARA, YBhg. Datuk Wira Dr. Asyraf Wajdi bin Dato’ Dusuki, as well as the management of MARA, KPTM Sdn. Bhd., and UPTM. The UPTM Zakat Unit will also assist in providing living expenses and basic necessities while awaiting the approval of her MARA loan application. In addition, a laptop will be donated to Nor Hazreen to facilitate her studies.
UPTM Vice-Chancellor, Associate Professor Dr. Sharifah Syahirah binti Sy Shiekh, accompanied by Professor Dr. Syamsul Fozy bin Osman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs & Alumni, the Registrar of UPTM, officers from the UPTM Zakat Centre, and the Head of Programme, Faculty of Business & Accounting (FABA), also took the time to personally meet and support the student.

YAYASAN RAJA SHAMRI
A UPTM student, Sharifah Sofea Binti Syed Muhammad (Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Corporate Communication), received educational equipment assistance from the Yayasan Raja Shamri (YRS) on Tuesday, 27 August 2024.
YRS contributed a laptop and a printer to the student to facilitate her studies. Meanwhile, the UPTM Zakat Unit will provide additional assistance for her living expenses and basic necessities while waiting for the approval of her MARA loan application.
Yayasan Raja Shamri was represented by Mr. Muhammad Ridzuan bin Mohamed Said, Chief Executive Officer of YRS, Mrs. Wan Zalilah binti Shafie, Coordinator of 3rd Force Pasir Mas, Mr. Saifulbhari bin Hussin from 3rd Force Pasir Mas, and several YRS officers. UPTM was represented by Associate Professor Dr. Syamsul Fozy bin Osman, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs & Alumni, Mr. Md Hanafizah, Registrar of UPTM, and officers from the UPTM Zakat Unit.

YAYASAN BUDIMAS
A UPTM student, Mohammad Daniel Ezairy bin Abdul Hafiz (Diploma in Accountancy), has received a scholarship and financial assistance from the Yayasan Budimas in August 2024.
The scholarship covers tuition fees, a monthly living allowance of RM500, and an additional contribution of a laptop.
It is hoped that this assistance will help ease the student’s financial burden. UPTM expresses its deepest gratitude and appreciation to Yayasan Budimas for their generosity in sponsoring our student.
