Encourage women to apply in subjects in which they are underrepresented
5.3.4
Does your university as a body encourage applications by women in subjects where they are
underrepresented?
Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) has implemented various outreach programmes aimed at promoting higher education and encouraging applications, particularly among women in underrepresented fields. Key initiatives include the Career Fair and Open Day, visits to local primary and secondary schools, Rural Education Tour, Selangkah ke Universiti 2024, Higher Education Tours (HITS) 2024, MADANI Career Fair, and the International Education Fair.
In addition to these outreach activities, UPTM organized specialized visits and programmes to enhance students’ academic exposure and professional development. These include a visit to the Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM), the Postgraduate Transformation Programme (PTP), and an academic visit to the Accountant General’s Department of Malaysia (JANM). Through these programmes, students gained practical insights, improved their awareness of governance and integrity, and were inspired to pursue higher education and professional careers with a strong ethical foundation.
Through these activities, UPTM provides exposure and motivation for female students to pursue studies across various disciplines, including those traditionally dominated by men. These efforts support Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) – Gender Equality, by promoting greater female participation in higher education and professional fields.
